Family Radio has gained plenty of media attention by declaring the end of the world to be slated for tomorrow at dinner time. Ridicule abounds as many are preparing post-rapture parties and choosing what to wear on that momentous event. I don’t blame them. I look forward to being in my pulpit the day after on Sunday – that is always celebration enough for me. The trouble with Harold Camping’s message is the disregard for rather obvious biblical truths, as even the secular media has pointed out: no one knows about that day or the hour, etc.
Actually, such claims are not new and follow beautifully Jesus’ warnings, that many will come in my name…and say ‘Here is the Christ’ or ‘There he is’…nation will rise against nation…there will be famines and earthquakes, etc. Plenty of that going around, isn’t there? Never in the history of the world has nation been able to rise against nation when they are on the opposite side of the globe, as they do now. And I’m told that since the USGS has begun measuring seismic activity, earthquakes have indeed increased steadily up to this point. Throw in the formation of Israel after two millennia and I’d say the time is ripe for our Lord’s return; surely we are not too far off now.
It is sad for me to see people turned off by Mr. Camping’s unbiblical message. I understand the natural inclination to mock him and attend post-rapture parties. But the real tragedy is that people do not see that Jesus warned about such predictions and told us they’d be plentiful (as they have been), and particularly so, closer to His return. The tragedy is not mocking his “slated” return, but in turn ignoring his imminent return. Christians vary on their precise understanding of the details of Christ’s return, but without question it is basically lights out when He hits the stage and I dare not be on the wrong side of the tracks on that Day. Because that Day will turn into your worst everlasting nightmare. Of that, there is no dispute:
When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with blazing fire and his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and the majesty of his power, on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and marveled at among all those who have believed. God’s words, not mine.
For those who mock the concept of Christ’s return, please do not be dissuaded by Harold Camping’s folly. Your eternity rests squarely on your response to Jesus Christ and the good news of His Gospel:
For God so loved the world, that He gave his one and only son, and whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. My apologies for yet another false prediction of Christ’s return; I recommend however that you focus your attention on the reason for His first appearing!
For those of you who love the Lord Jesus and His return, let us live every day cherishing the blessed hope of His soon return. To quote the Apostle Paul, Therefore dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
Amen! Maranatha – Come, Lord Jesus!
