My old pastor used to talk often about setting up ebenezers. I have to admit, it was not a term I was familiar with. The only thing that popped into my mind was Ebenezer Scrooge...then Scrooge McDuck, which naturally led to cartoons in general and from there...well you get the point.
What he was talking about however was reminders, specifically reminders of what God has done. A few posts ago I wrote about needing some tassles. This is in the same vein. Check out Psalm 66:16,
"Come and hear, all you who fear God,
and I will tell what he has done for my soul."
The ebenezer, or reminder, is needed because if we are ever to tell anyone what God has done for us we have to remember it, and let's face it, we're not very good at that. It just takes a bad day to forget the great things God has done. But we don't remember just for our benefit. We remember so we can tell others. That's our job. We make God look great, because he is great, to the rest of the world. We brag about him. We tell about how fast he is (he chased us down when we ran from him). We tell about how strong he is (he broke the chains that enslaved us). We tell about how compassionate he is (he sacrificed himself / his son to reconcile us to him). And then we tell about all the things he has done in and for us throughout our lives. But we can't tell someone about his great deeds in our life if we don't remember them, and so we build some reminders, some ebenezers. What reminders are you building into your life today?
