"That wasn't scary!" Oh how many times did I say that growing up, usually right after almost jumping through the ceiling at something that "didn't scare me." We do like to put on a show for the world around us don't we; as if we have it all together when the truth is we all have deep struggles with different things, even some seemingly non-threatening things related to a disciplined life of faith. There is one aspect of the Christian life of discipline that seems to intimidate, maybe scare us, more than others - scripture memorization. I'm not sure why because I see kids from the ages of 3 to 12 memorizing tons of verses every week in our Awana program. But us older folk, if we haven't made it a habit from early on, have real trouble getting started. Well if that is you, maybe this will help you get over the initial intimidation.
It is a method published by a Dr. Andrew Davis (whom I know nothing about but like the method) that involves one or two verses a day slowly building on the previous day's work until you have entire passages (even books) committed to memory. Don't let that intimidate you. Focus on the one verse a day. If you commit to doing that 5 days a week you'll be amazed how quickly you'll develop in this area. Yes, it takes some time and effort, but if that's what it takes to hide God's word in our heart so that we might not sin against Him then it's well worth it. What do you say?
